This is a fairly new instrument in Pakistan, but is popular today in Balochistan. The Benjo or banjo is basically a dulcimer. The Balochi version of the banjo is a large version, approximately one meter in length. It is often used in pieces with sarod accompaniment. This can be constructed with a variety of materials. It produces a bright, metallic sound.
The Benju, a small oblong zither with a typewriter-like keyboard, derived from the spinet and dulcimer. Baloch people doubled its size (to one meter in length), improved it, and created a playing technique which both wonderfully reproduces the finesse of professional music, and at the same time, allows a rhythmic drone similar to the tanburag. Its bright timbre matches quite well with that of the sorud, and some pieces even sound better on the Benju than they do on any other instrument. This metamorphosis is mainly due to the work of Master Joma Surizahi.
The main string of the Benju is double. On either side of it, accompaniment strings have been placed as follows: (C-G) / C C / (G-C) - in relative pitches. Its tessitura spans over two octaves and one tone; the chromatic scale is obtained from a keyboard with twenty five to thirty two round keys. Best used as a solo instrument, the Benju also suits singing, but is rarely used in epic pieces.
Surod/Soruz
The name of this instrument, Surando is based on “surayindah”, a Persian word for one who produces tunes. The Surando is a common instrument in the Sindh, Balochistan and Frontier regions regions of Pakistan. In the Frontier region this instrument is known as called Saro, while in Balochistan it is called Surod. The main part of the instrument is made with a variety of different types of wood, while the strings are traditionally constructed from horse hairs and intestines of sheep or goat. This instrument can have a varying number of strings, with more simple versions having 5-7 strings and the most complex having 11-13 strings.
One of the best and well known Surod player of Balochistan is Ostaad Rasool Baksh Zangshahi. Balochistan can be felt from the sound that he brings out from his Surod. Something that he has been doing since world can remember.
Ostaad Rasool Baksh Zangshahi has traveled to Europe and Arab states (UAE) to perform in front of 100s of music lovers. He is the messenger of Balochistan to introduce the love, passion and the talent of Baloch people. His last major concert was held in Sweden which was welcomed by 100s of audience.
